GOOD TO KNOW

Public Transportation
Ruter# (Tel: +47 815 54 411) runs buses, the subway and streetcars all over Oslo. They offer a wide range of different types of tickets, from single-ticket to one day passes and more.  The Oslo Pass, which can be purchased at tourists offices and hotels and is available for 24, 48 or 72 hours, is valid for most museums and sights and for all public transportation in Oslo and it surroundings.

Taxis
Call Oslo Taxi (Tel: +47 22 38 80 90) or 02303 from within Oslo. If you hail a cab on the street, we recommend using Oslo Taxi or Norgestaxi. Some of the other companies have a bad reputation.

Tipping
Service charges and tips are included in restaurant bills and taxi fares and no additional gratuity is expected, but there´s no problem if you wish to reward exceptional service with a top. There are no set rules to abide by, but most customers leave small change at bars and, occasionally, 5-10% at restaurants. Wait staff are often paid derisory wages on the assumption that tips will boost their salaries, so think twice about leaving a bare table at meal´s end. Taxi drivers also expect a small tip. Bargaining for services or goods is not a usual practice.

CLIMATE
With its northern location, Norway is often regarded as a cold and wet country. This is true during the winter months from November to March, where the mean temperature in Oslo is -5°C.

But even though Norway shares the same latitude as Alaska, Greenland and Siberia, it has a much friendlier climate than the latitude indicates. This is due to the Gulf Stream, which run steady near our long shore-line, warming up the climate. In the summer months the temperature in Oslo is quite comfortable, varying from 20 to 35°C.

Check the weather Link for a five-day Oslo weather forecast.
